Helping The Helpless

There are lots of helpless people in our country.Beggers are not the only helpless people. There may be others who are desperate and helpless on certain occasions. When a person falls into trouble he becomes helpless.if there is nobody to give him a helping hand.so,it is the duty of everybody to do some sevice and be helpful to those who are poor and helpless.

There are so many people.boys, girls, men and women who become helpless due to natural disasters.
There are also people who have nobody to look after them. The physically and mentally handicapped people are also helpless. It is a noble habbit to help these helpless people.

The begger is undoubtedly a helpless person. Most of them cannot do a job to make their day to day
exisence. So they have no way of earning money. They beg for food.Clothing and money, most frequently to them and to feed their young and helpless family members. Therefore,it is our duty to help them whenever they come to us in search of help..

Our country is not rich country.there are lots of helpless people who do not even have their daily
meals.some do not have anything to cover their bodies.some have no houses. There are poor beggers who spend their nights in pavements in towns. Some of the elderly people are also helpless.

The social services Department is trying to help these helpless people. It gives assistance to some of them. Most of the helpless people get samurdhi assistance from the government. But that meagre some of money is not sufficient for their living. That is why well-to-do people should help them.

A lot of wealthy people are there who do not even look at helpless people. They drive away beggers without giving them at least some food to eat. This is a very bad habit. We as small children should always try to help the helpless.

The Eagle and the fox

An eagle seized a fox cub and made to carry it off.The mother fox begged him to have pity. The eagle refused."What can she do to me? " he thought."My nest is high up in a pine tree. She can't reach it."

And he carried the fox cub away. The mother fox ran to the field, took a fire brand from the men there and carried it to the pine tree. She was about to set fire to it, when the eagle begged forgiveness and gave her back her cub..

The Tree Planting Campaign

Tree is a friend of man.The tree gives us good air and also good foods. If there are no trees we cannot get foods at all.The tree also gives us shelter. We can get timber from the tree and our homes.

Not only in the village, but also in the towns we can see people have planted trees by the side of the road.Even in many places of the colombo city there are trees grown with the aim of giving shelter to the people.

Due to the indiscriminate fellings of trees.now we do not get seasonal rains peoperly. Therefore, it has been necessary for us to plant more and more trees and get sufficient rain for cultivation purposes and also for drinking.

This year's tree planting campaign started in kandy under the patronage of the prime minister. The prime minister inaugurated the campaign by planting a na sapling in the Botanical garden at peradeniya. After the inauguration,he said that we should try to plant more and more trees without which the people will not be in a position to make their existence.

There was a programme to plant one million trees throughout the country. My father said that planting one million trees would not be sufficient. He said we had to plant as many trees as possible.

The recent drought is the result of indiscriminate felling of trees by unscrupulous people who do not know the value of trees or the environment. We suffered a lot because of this drought. There was no water for  cultiation purposes. In most of the areas in the dry zone, people could not easily find even drinking water.

Therefore, tree planting has become a must.Everybody should try to plant more and more  trees wherever possible. If this does not happen, the entrire country would be a desert before long..

The Story Of Rivers

Rivers are vital carriers of water and nutrients to areas all around the earth. The world is blessed with hundreds of thousands of rivers which apart from their beauty play a vital role in nature. They are of great importance geographically, biologically, historically and culturally.

There are rivers in every continent except Antarctica.Rivers are an important part of the earth's topography as they carry huge quantities of water to the sea from the land."

In simple words a river is fresh water flowing across the surface of the land usually to the sea.It flows in a channel of which the bottom is called the bed and the sides of the channel are called the banks.

The rivers flow downstream starting from the highest point of an area and gain more water from other streams, rivers, Springs, added rainfall and other water sources.

Rivers bogin in mountains or hills where rain water or snow collects and from tiny streams called gullies. These gullies either grow larger when they collect more water and become streams themselves or meet stream and to the water already in the stream.

Most of the rivers end when they flow into a large body of water and the end of the water is called the mouth.

There is usually a river delta at the mouth. It is a large, silty area where the river splits into many different slow-flowing channels with muddy banks. At the source of a river the water is usually pure.

As the water blows downstream it picks up silts and mineral salts from the soil and rock. Many other chemicals enter the river water as it flows downstream.

The Sea, The River And The Streams

One man boasted to another that he could drink a lot."I could drink up the whole sea," he said.

                                  " You Couldn't."

"Yes,I could.I bet you a thousand roubles.I will drink up the whole sea."

Next morning they came to the and said,"Go and drink up sea or give us a thousand roubles!.."

" I said  I would drink up the sea and I will," he said, "But I didn't say I would drink the rivers.Dam the rivers and streams so the water does not flow in to the sea, then I'll drink it up.."

The Most Interesting Book I Read

Our school library was not so rich. But there are books which I like very much. One of my friends one day showed me a certain book in the library and said that it was his favourite book.He also said that it was the second part of the most famous Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain.

I borrowed the book from the librarian on the advice of my friend. When I went home that day,I had an immediate lunch, went to my room and started reading the book.

How ineresting was it! It was a wonderful book. The book was full of adventures. The was a wonderful book. The main character was Huckleberry Finn who was a poor English boy whose father was a third class drunkard. This father wanted to get his son's fortune which he got previously in yet another adventure with Tom Sawyer, his friend.so Finn runs away from the custody of his father and meets another boy. This boy was Jim who had been running away from his master. He had been a slave boy.

The two friends go to the sea and get on to a ship. They also go to various islands in the sea and engage themselves in many adventures. At last they come home.Finn finds that his father had died and he was no more in danger.Jim also gets his freedom with Finn's help.

This interesting children's novel had been written by well-known English Author Mark Twain who had previously written the famous book Tom Sawyer. Both these books are popular even today. So many millions of children throughout the English speaking world must have read these books.Much more than Tom Sawyer,it was the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which was the most interesting book I have ever read.

The Merchant And The Thieves

Two men went into a merchant's shop to buy shawls. The merchant turned away from his wares. When he looked at the counter again, one of the shawls had gone. The merchant stopped the two men and said,

"One of you has stolen a shawl."

One man swore that he hadn't got the shawl, while the other swore that he hadn't taken it."Then you are both thieves," said the merchant.

He guessed that one had taken the shawl and given it to the other. He searched the thief who swore that he hadn't taken the shawl, found it on him and took both thieves to the magistrate.

The best asset is education

We have heard our teachers and parents always spea of the value of having a good education.we hear this from our childhood. It is the elders who know much more than us the value of education.Small children know how to play. They think much about playful things and toys.If we devote more time for playing we loose our valuable time which we can devote for studies.Time is very important for any of us, specially for small children who are studying.

"Today's child is tomorrow's citizen" is the saying. If the child gets a good education,he has a bright future.
He will surely rise up and go to the highest position in the society if he is wise and educated. He can also get
a very good job and a good way of making his living.

Even if you have wealth, that can be stolen or destroyed by fire or any other mishap. But education is different.Nobody can steal it.Nobody can rob or grab it.This shows how important education is.

We must do our utmost to study from our childhood. There are poor parents who cannot afford to spend for their children's education. But the child should, even without a proper breakfast,go to school regularly and do his studies without a break. If his parents cannot afford to buy the necessary books and pen.pencils,or instrument boxes, should  try to borrow them from his friends or anybody who is willing to lend. The obedience to elders is necessary for every child. He should also obey his teachers and seniors. The person with a sound education is highly respected by the society. He shines throughout his life.

If a person has no proper education,he will have to do manual work and there will be no good place for him in the society.More frequently he is looked down by the people and also by his friends. That is why we, from our childhood, should try to get a very good education.

Buried Love

This romantic life in kashmir was drawing to its end after three glorious months.Miss John was leaving a week earlier than Mrs.Rhodes, and about two days before she left I look her alone to the hotel for dinner. We walked to the hotel in perfect silence,a silence so heavy that I could hardly breathe. The hotel seemed to be

far away and yet not far enough. That night, as I served her at table the temptation to touch her was overpowering, and I  had almost  forgotten myself when I dropped  her coffee cup.which made me pull myself  together and realize my position and my caste. On the way home there was a bridge over the canal to be crossed. She stopped on the bridge without a word, So  I stopped beside her looking onto the clam water of the canal shining between the gigantic chenar trees. In the distance a gramophone was playing and the music floated over the water. We stood for a long time without saying a word to each other.I think the parting was disturbing her. There was something which she could not have explained and which she was trying to express. It might have been just a fancy of her own,or it may have been the subconscious knowledge of the secret, consuming passion of her attendant that was affecting her on this calm and beautiful night as we tarried on the bridge. It seemed to me that we stood there for ages,as if neither of   us dare break the magic spell of night and music. Our houseboat was only a few yards from the bridge, and "Good Night" was the only word that passed between us.As we parted everything then went into the darkness. The mail lorry came up to the bridge to take her away from the romantic city of srinagar and away from me.After she had taken her seat I put a woolen rug over  her knees to keep her warm on the journey, and she handed me a ten rupee note as a parting gift and sweetly said ''Good Bye".I watched her hand till the lorry was out of sight. Then I realized what I had lost and lost forever..
